What matters for a startup
A startup buying AI support has different constraints from an enterprise. You need something live this week, a bill you can predict, and an AI that won’t embarrass you in front of your first customers. That makes three things more important than feature lists: how the AI is priced, whether a person can review its replies, and what startup discount or free tier is on offer.
Prices come from each vendor’s pricing page, checked on 29 and 30 October 2026. We make Supahelp, which is on this list.
| Tool | What the AI does | AI price | Startup option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Fin | AI agent in chat and email | $0.99 per outcome, plus seats | 93% off for eligible startups |
| Help Scout Envoy | AI agent from your knowledge base | $0.75 per resolution, plus seats | 3-month free trial of the AI; free plan for 5 users |
| Plain | Customer agent and team assistant | About $1 per resolution in credits, plus seats | 50% off for startups |
| Zendesk AI agents | AI agents for messaging, email and voice | $1.50 to $2.00 per resolution after 5 per agent | 6-month Suite trial for eligible startups |
| Freshdesk Freddy | AI agent and agent copilot | $0.49 per session after 500 free | 14-day trial |
| Featurebase Fibi | AI agent in a support and feedback tool | $0.49 per resolution | Free plan for 1 seat |

Which tool fits which startup
- Customers ask inside your product: Intercom. Fin answers in the chat window first. Apply for the startup discount before you compare list prices.
- Customers mostly email you: Help Scout. Its AI agent costs less per resolution than Fin, and you can try it free for three months.
- B2B customers in Slack: Plain, which handles Slack, email and in-app support and halves its price for startups.
- You expect to grow into phone and many channels: Zendesk or Freshdesk. Freshdesk is cheaper per AI conversation.
- You want AI included, not metered: HelpCanvas or Supahelp, which include a monthly allowance in a flat price. Supahelp also holds every AI reply to a request for a teammate’s approval. It has no live chat.
Three things to do before you switch AI on
- Write your top 20 answers. Most of these tools answer mainly from your help articles. With nothing written, the AI has little to say.
- Price it at your volume. Multiply last month’s repeat questions by each tool’s unit price. Our cost per AI answer comparison has a worked example.
- Decide what needs a person. Refunds, security and anything account-specific usually should. See AI help desks that require human approval.
